Every clinic we hold depends on volunteers. Whether you are a practising lawyer or a UNB law student, there is a place for you here — and a real difference to be made.
For lawyers
Lawyers from the Fredericton legal community are the backbone of the clinic. There are two ways to take part, and you are welcome to choose whichever suits your schedule.
The first is to attend a clinic session in person. There, you supervise the law students as they meet members of the public, stepping in to advise and to make sure the guidance people receive is sound. The second is to supervise student legal research between sessions, reviewing the work students do to prepare answers for the people they have met.
It is a low-barrier way to support access to justice. A single evening of your time helps someone who could not otherwise afford advice — and along the way you mentor the next generation of lawyers. Many find it some of the most rewarding work they do.

To put your name forward as a supervising lawyer, email us at [email protected]. We will explain the next steps and find a session that works for you.
For UNB law students
If you study at the UNB Faculty of Law, volunteering at the clinic gives you something the classroom cannot: a real client, with a real problem, sitting across the table from you — all under the watchful eye of a supervising lawyer.
Students apply to volunteer once a year. Over a term you will help welcome visitors, work through the intake form and means test that each person completes on arrival, and carry out the legal research needed to answer their questions. It is hands-on, supervised, and a genuine introduction to client-facing practice.

Applications open once a year. To express your interest, email our student representative at [email protected].
Why volunteer
Volunteers tell us they get as much out of the clinic as the people they help. Here is what taking part can offer.
-
01
Real client experience
Meet members of the public and translate the law into plain, useful guidance.
-
02
Mentorship both ways
Lawyers pass on hard-won judgement; students bring fresh energy and curiosity.
-
03
A flexible commitment
Help at a session or review research between them — give what time you can.
-
04
A tangible impact
Every visit you support is a New Brunswicker who leaves knowing their next step.
